The History of Cabbagetown

The town’s name comes from the Irish immigrants who moved here in the 1840’s and grew cabbage in their front yards. The Canadian writer, Hugh Garner, wrote Cabbagetown, which described life in Cabbagetown during the Great Depression. Cabbagetown is a Heritage Conservation District protected by Municipal Law, which includes:

Cabbagetown’s current boundaries of Gerrard Street (south), Wellesley Street (north), Sherbourne Street (west) and Don River (east) were originally Gerrard Street (north), Queen Street (south), Parliament Street (west) and Don River (east).
